Contrary to what many lovers of Persian poetry may believe, the composition of quatrains (rubā’iyāt) was not exclusive to Khayyām of Nishapur. Many other poets, including Hafez, also experimented with this poetic form. Hafez’s quatrains are enchanting, so powerful that they transport the reader into another realm. We have selected two of his quatrains here to bring you closer to the world of this great master of Persian poetry.
برخلاف نظر بسیاری از علاقهمندان به شعر فارسی، سرودن رباعی مختص خیّام نیشابوری نیست. شاعران بسیاری داریم که در سرودن رباعی طبعآزمایی کردهاند، از جمله حافظ. این شاعر نامآور رباعیات دلنشینی سروده که خواننده را از خویش بیخویش کرده به جهانی دیگر سوق میدهد. دو نمونه از رباعیهای حافظ را برگزیدهایم تا شما نیز به جهان این سخنور نامدار نزدیکتر شوید.

Not even seven thousand years of joy
Is worth seven days of depression
Ney dolat-e donyā be setam mi-arzad
Ney lezzat-e masti-ash alam mi-arzad
Na haft hezār sāl-e shādi-ye jahān
In mehnat-e haft roze gham mi-arzad
نی دولت دنیا به ستم میارزد
نی لذت مستیاش الم میارزد
نه هفت هزار ساله شادی جهان
این محنت هفت روزه غم میارزد

This rose is from the dust of one like me
My joy within the rose thus I can see

The colourful rose brings the sweet sent of she (her)
In gol ze bar-e ham-nafasi mi-āyad
Shādi be delam az ou basi mi-āyad
Peyvaste az ān ruy konam hamdami-ash
Kaz rang-e vey-am buy-e kasi mi-āyad
این گل ز بر همنفسی میآید
شادی به دلم از او بسی میآید
پیوسته از آن روی کنم همدمیاش
کز رنگ وی اَم بوی کسی میآید
